Soham Mere is spoken of (1794) as the largest lake in England, next in order of size being Ramsay and Whittlesey Meres. Mere is the Anglo-Saxon for lake or marsh. The low lying land stretching from the west of Soham to the neighbouring village of Wicken and out into the fen towards Ely, was once a great mass of water known as Soham Mere; an inland sea that had access to the port of Kings Lynn and the Wash via the course of the River Cam or Granta and the River Ouse or Old West River.

2 giorni fa · From the 18th century to the early 20th Soham usually had for grinding its corn a water mill standing by 1700, perhaps in 1656, on the 'Soham river' east of the Mere, and at least two or three windmills north and south of the village.
Soham was the first see of the Bishops of East Anglia. A situation regularised by the marriage of Etheldreda to Tonbert the last King of the Iceni. The first cathedral was founded here; subsequently moved to Ely about 820AD. The populace had gone to Soham Mereside to trade.
