Stari Most, stone arch bridge spanning the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a way, the bridge encapsulates the history of the country in a single architectural masterpiece. The original Stari Most was commissioned to replace a swaying wooden suspension bridge by the Ottoman emperor Süleyman the Magnificent in 1557.
