Stonehearst Asylum (previously titled Eliza Graves) is a psychological period thriller that boasts an impressive cast, including Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine and Brendan Gleeson, and a formidable director in Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Transsiberian). The movie also features alluring design that evokes all the classic elements of late-Victorian gothic horror and romanticism.

At the same time, Stonehearst is a film that's uncertain about itself, never quite sure of what it wants to do or say. Tonally, it's all over the place, which isn't helped by a hackneyed and repetitive script. The end result is kind of a mess, despite the visuals and performances trying to convince you otherwise -- but perhaps that's appropriate, since the film's (mostly) insane characters put on rational facades to appear normal.

Loosely based on the short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether" by Edgar Allan Poe, the movie opens with a med-school instructor (played by Gleeson, who's only seen here and at the very end) using a helpless, heroin-sedated patient, Eliza Graves (Beckinsale), to demonstrate the "symptoms" of hysteria. From the onset, it's firmly established that these turn-of-the-century "intellects" have very little understanding of modern psychology and ethical treatment. Fast forward to Christmastime, and one such intellect, a recent Oxford graduate named Edward Newgate (Sturgess), arrives at the secluded Stonehearst Asylum in search of apprenticeship. There, he meets Dr. Lamb (Kingsley), esteemed superintendent of the facility, as well as the now-admitted Eliza, and Edward immediately falls in love with her (as you do).

I won't spoil the hook for you -- although it's pretty obvious from the first 10 minutes of the movie (and the trailers) -- but soon Edward begins to notice strange goings on at Stonehearst, most notably Lamb's questionable and "innovative" methods. These include enabling the patients' deranged fantasies and letting them openly intermingle with the staff. One patient, for example, thinks he's a horse. Lamb's treatment? Accommodate the patient's delusion. "Why make a miserable man out of a perfectly happy horse?" he remarks.

On paper, Stonehearst Asylum has a lot going for it: great actors, solid direction and a chilling Victorian atmosphere. Sadly, in execution, the film doesn't quite deliver. Rather than taking Edgar Allan Poe's original short story and expanding it into something unique, the film relies on repetitive plot points and tired tropes to pad out the narra...
