The Battle of Hong Kong (8–25 December 1941), also known as the Defence of Hong Kong and the Fall of Hong Kong, was one of the first battles of the Pacific War in World War II.

From 8 to 25 December 1941, almost 2,000 troops from Winnipeg and Quebec City — sent to Hong Kong expecting little more than guard duty — fought bravely against the overwhelming power of an invading Japanese force.
However, on 7 December 1941, three weeks after the Canadians arrived in Hong Kong, Japan stunned the world by attacking the United States’ naval fleet at Pearl Harbor. Six hours later, the battle-hardened troops of the Japanese 38th Division attacked Hong Kong with overwhelming force.
