The Yeomen of the Guard; or, The Merryman and His Maid, is a Savoy Opera, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It premiered at the Savoy Theatre on 3 October 1888 and ran for 423 performances.
Overview. Colonel Fairfax has been falsely accused of sorcery by a jealous relative who covets his estates and money. The Colonel is condemned to death for his 'crime' and waits in the Tower of London for his execution.
The Yeomen of the Guard: Directed by Stanley Dorfman. With Tommy Steele, Laureen Livingstone, Della Jones, Terry Jenkins. Sergeant Meryll and his daughter connive to help free Colonel Fairfax, wrongly condemned to death for sorcerey, by helping him to escape and pretending that he is Leonard Meryll, the Sergeant's son.

Henry rewarded his bodyguards by formally establishing the Yeomen of the Guard of (the body of) our Lord the King. This royal act recognized their bravery and loyalty in doing their duty, and designated them as the first members of a bodyguard to protect the King (or Queen) of England forever.
