General Thomas Simpson Woodward, a Creek War veteran under Andrew Jackson, laid out the city and founded it in 1833. It became the county seat in the same year and it was incorporated in 1843. [4] .

Tuskegee, city, seat of Macon county, east-central Alabama, U.S., adjacent to Tuskegee National Forest, about 40 miles (65 km) east of Montgomery. It was founded in 1833, and its name was a variation of Taskigi, a nearby Creek Indian village.
