This is a list of North American telephone area codes in effect for the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). The area to which an area code is officially assigned is known as a Numbering Plan Area (NPA). An area code is part of a telephone number in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.
Original Area Codes. ORIGINAL AREA CODES - UNITED STATES AND CANADA. In 1947 the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) was established and 86 original area codes were geographically assigned to states and provinces in the United States and Canada. All area codes were three digits as they are today.
List of original NANP area codes. This is the list of original North American Numbering Plan area codes of 86 plan areas as defined by AT&T in 1947. In preparation for direct distance dialing, AT&T and the Bell System developed the North American Numbering Plan in the 1940s.
