Sahara Avenue is a major east-west roadway in the Las Vegas Valley. The former State Route 589 ( SR 589) comprised a large portion of the street. The roadway is named after the Sahara Hotel and Casino, which itself is named after the Sahara desert.

State Route 589 (SR 589), which is now known as Sahara, was originally known as San Francisco Avenue. It established the southernmost boundary of Las Vegas city limits. Other streets in county lands were named after the property owners or destinations of the streets.

The resort is located on 2.5 acres (1.0 ha) of land at 300 West Sahara Avenue, near the Las Vegas Strip. The Ahern Hotel is adjacent to the Allure Las Vegas high-rise condominium, opened in 2008 by developer Andrew Fonfa.
The property is located at 1501 West Sahara Avenue, beside Interstate 15 and just west of the Las Vegas Strip. It initially opened in September 1978, as the Las Vegas Inn and Casino. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1984. The casino portion closed the following year, amid financial problems.
