There are 20 parliamentary committees. A committee consists of between 25 and 88 MEPs, and has a chair, a bureau and a secretariat. The political makeup of the committees reflects that of the plenary assembly. The parliamentary committees meet once or twice a month in Brussels.
The committees of the European Parliament are designed to aid the European Commission in initiating legislation. Standing committees are made up of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), who are directly elected to the seats in the European Parliament by the electorate.
The European Parliament is the EU's law-making body with 705 MEPs. It has 20 committees that prepare legislation and debate proposals, and a plenary session that votes on them.
