After Mindaugas's death, Lithuania lapsed into internal disorder. Three of his successors—Treniota, his son-in-law Svarn, and his son Vaišvilkas—were assassinated during the next seven years. Stability did not return until the reign of Traidenis, designated Grand Duke c. 1270. Legacy

Daumantas and Treniota surprised Mindaugas and killed him and the two sons rhat were with him. Mindaugas' oldest son Vaišvilkas was away at that time and survived. Thus ended the life of Mindaugas, first ruler of the unified Lithuanian State, first and only King of Lithuania.
