Through the most recent reforms and after the division of the NCOs in multiple roles, the role of the Marshals reorganized its four ranks: Marshal, Ordinary Marshal, Chief Marshal and Assistant Marshal. In 2001 the Assistant Marshal became 1 st Marshal and created the position of 1 st Lieutenant Marshal.
The maximum number of stars remained four, assigned to the "Marshals of Italy". In 1938, after the conquest of the Emperor, the rank of "First Marshal of the Emperor" was created for the King, for the Emperor and for the Head of Government; it was formed by a double Greek fret with a Roman Eagle.
