Chartley Castle lies in ruins to the north of the village of Stowe-by-Chartley in Staffordshire, between Stafford and Uttoxeter. The remains of the castle and associated earthworks are a Scheduled Monument, the site having been protected since 1925. The castle itself is a Grade II* listed building.
Chartley Castle was originally a late 11th century earthwork motte and double bailey fortress, founded by the Earls of Chester. Altered into a stone enclosure castle the early 13th century, it was abandoned by 1485 and described as a ruin in 1545.
The archaeological features of Chartley Castle, Chartley Old Hall, its gardens and the associated water control features not only provide important evidence for the history and occupation of Chartley but also illustrate how the same piece of landscape could be adapted for a sequence of different purposes in the medieval and post-medieval periods.
