Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk. Earl of Suffolk is a title which has been created four times in the Peerage of England. The first creation, in tandem with the creation of the title of Earl of Norfolk, came before 1069 in favour of Ralph the Staller; but the title was forfeited by his heir, Ralph de Guader, in 1074.
29 mag 2018 · Howard, Thomas, 1st Baron Howard de Walden and earl of Suffolk (1561–1626). Howard's father, the 4th duke of Norfolk, was executed in 1572 when Thomas was 11 for conspiring to rescue Mary, queen of Scots. His mother was heiress to Baron Audley of Walden, Henry VIII's lord chancellor, and he inherited Audley End.
A full-length portrait to left in Garter robes and wearing a hat. He is shown standing against a background of rich silk drapes. In the Armada campaign of 1588 Howard commanded the ‘Golden Lion’ and particularly distinguished himself. In 1591 he commanded the annual expedition to the Azores to intercept the Spanish treasure fleet.
