Folkestone ( / ˈfəʊkstən / FOHK-stən) is a port town on the English Channel, in Kent, south-east England. The town lies on the southern edge of the North Downs at a valley between two cliffs. It was an important harbour, shipping port and fashionable coastal resort for most part of the 19th and mid 20th centuries.
The history of Folkestone stretches back to ancient times, with evidence of human habitation dating to the Mesolithic and Paleolithic ages over 12,000 years ago. [1] Its close proximity to the Continent means that it has often been a point of transit for migrating peoples.
L'Eurotunnel è una galleria ferroviaria lunga oltre 50 km che unisce il comune del Regno Unito di Folkestone nel Kent a quello francese di Coquelles, vicino a Calais, passando sotto il fondo del Canale della Manica.
Folkestone è membro dei Cinque Porti, essendo stata incorporata come ramo aziendale di Dover. Nel 1629 gli abitanti locali ottennero una licenza per costruire un porto, prima del quale i pescherecci dipendevano interamente dalla protezione naturale del porto naturale formato dal torrente Pent.
