Matthias I er ou Mathias I er [1] (en hongrois : Mátyás ; en tchèque : Matyáš), né le 24 février 1557 à Vienne et mort dans la même ville le 20 mars 1619, est prince de la maison de Habsbourg, le cinquième enfant de l’empereur Maximilien II et de Marie d'Espagne.

Matthias (24 February 1557 – 20 March 1619) was Holy Roman Emperor from 1612 to 1619, Archduke of Austria from 1608 to 1619, King of Hungary and Croatia from 1608 to 1618 and King of Bohemia from 1611 to 1617.

Born in Vienna on 24 February 1557. Died in Vienna on 20 March 1619. Motto: ‘Concordia lumine Maior – Concord is stronger than light’.
Matthias entered the political stage as an ambitious risk-taker in a hazardous adventure. Aged not even twenty, he came into contact with representatives of the Estates-General of the Netherlands, which were engaged in a war of independence with Spain.
Under Maximilian, the possessions of the Habsburgs would be united again under one ruler, after he had re-conquered the Duchy of Austria after the death of Matthias Corvinus, who resided in Vienna and styled himself duke of Austria from 1485 to 1490.
Biografie lesen. Matthias war politisch sehr ehrgeizig und geriet deshalb in Konflikt mit Kaiser Rudolf II., seinem Bruder. Nach schweren Auseinandersetzungen ("Bruderzwist") stürzte Matthias seinen Bruder durch ein Bündnis mit den Ständen schließlich vom Thron.
