An independent school district (ISD) is a type of school district in some US states for primary and secondary education that operates as an entity independent and separate from any municipality or county, and only under the oversight of the respective state government.
Independent schools can come in many forms: they can be co-ed or single-sex, day schools or boarding schools, religious or not religiously affiliated. What makes an independent school is its governance and its mission, not its structure.
For this reason they are called independent school districts, or ISDs. Independent school districts may embrace parts of two or more counties. More populous counties tend to have multiple school districts. Statewide, there are more than 1,000 independent school districts, compared to just 254 counties.
An independent school district is a legally separate body corporate and political. Most school districts operate as independent local governmental units with exclusive authority over K–12 public educational operations and policies. The extent of their control is set by state-level law.
Independent Schools are close-knit communities that provide students with individualized attention and challenge students to go beyond academics to develop into responsible, independent, and community-oriented citizens.
