Con la nascita del Partito Democratico, Federica Mogherini entra a fare parte del suo esecutivo, per poi lasciare la carica nell'aprile del 2008: in quell'anno viene eletta parlamentare alla Camera per il Pd nella circoscrizione Veneto, per poi essere nominata segretario della Commissione Difesa.
