Brutus Buckeye is the athletics mascot of Ohio State University and an anthromorphic buckeye nut. Brutus made his debut in 1965, with periodic updates to design and wardrobe occurring in the years since.

5 set 2014 · A Buckeye mascot first appeared at Ohio State's homecoming game in 1965, but he didn't receive a name until two weeks later. Brutus-- as we know him today-debuted in 1998. The first mascot was simply a paper-mache buckeye with a face and two (human) legs. Brutus was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007.
However, after the audition was over, Burkes found out that he would officially be Brutus Buckeye for the 1974 football season — becoming the first Black person to be Brutus.
