Cosimo I de' Medici (Firenze, 12 giugno 1519 – Firenze, 21 aprile 1574) è stato il secondo e ultimo duca di Firenze, dal 1537 al 1569, e, in seguito all'elevazione dello Stato mediceo a Granducato di Toscana, il primo Granduca di Toscana, dal 1569 fino alla sua morte.

Having brought nearly all Tuscany under his control after conquering the Republic of Siena, Cosimo I de' Medici, was elevated by a papal bull of Pope Pius V to Grand Duke of Tuscany on 27 August 1569. The Grand Duchy was ruled by the House of Medici until the extinction of its senior branch in 1737.
Cosimo I de' Medici, duke of Florence, sought to achieve a title which removed him from his status as a feudatory of the Holy Roman Emperor and gave him more political independence. Getting nothing from the Emperor, he turned to the Papacy. Already he had attempted to get Paul IV to give him the title of king or archduke with no success.
The title of Grand Duke of Tuscany was created on August 27, 1569 by a papal bull of Pope Pius V to Cosimo I de' Medici, member of the illustrious House of Medici. His coronation took place in Rome on March 5, 1570, by the hands of the Pope himself. [1]
