Lippe-Biesterfeld fu un ramo cadetto della casata di Lippe tra il 1762 ed il 1905. Nel 1916, un nuovo, principesco, ramo cadetto fu creato per la moglie ed i figli del principe Bernardo di Lippe. Divenne anche un titolo della casata reale olandese creato nel 1937.
Apparteneva alla famiglia sovrana tedesca dei Lippe-Biesterfeld ed era figlio del principe Bernhard di Lippe (1872-1934) e della baronessa Armgard von Sierstorpff-Cramm (1883-1971). Il suo unico fratello, Aschwin van Lippe (1914-1988), sposò la principessa Simone Arnoux (1915-2001).
In 1916, he created his younger brother, count Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, a prince. Through the latter's son, Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld (1911–2004), the prince consort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, it also became a title of the Dutch Royal House, created in 1937.
Nel 1937 il principe Bernardo di Lippe-Biesterfeld sposò la principessa Giuliana dei Paesi Bassi. Con l'ascesa al trono olandese della loro figlia Beatrice nel 1980, la casata mutò nome in Orange-Nassau anche se Beatrice e le sue sorelle sono agnaticamente membri della casa di Lippe.

Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld (later Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands; 29 June 1911 – 1 December 2004) was Prince of the Netherlands from 6 September 1948 to 30 April 1980 as the husband of Queen Juliana. They had four daughters together, including Beatrix, who was Queen of the Netherlands from 1980 to 2013.
