Vita. Discendente da una famiglia di ebrei iberici, fece pratica commerciale ad Amsterdam ed esercitò quindi a Londra la professione paterna di agente di cambio. Convertitosi al cristianesimo, si separò dalla famiglia e costituì un' azienda indipendente.
