Today's super-fast pit stops are conducted by highly-trained teams that feature professionals who resemble athletes more than mechanics in their speed. However, things haven't always been this way.
Today, a pit stop for a tyre change – refuelling was canned at the end of 2009 – is slow if it takes three seconds or more, with Red Bull Racing holding the current pit stop record, for changing all four tyres on Max Verstappen’s car in 1.82s at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix.
19 apr 2023 · The history of F1 pit stops dates back to the 1950s when they were primarily used for refueling. In the 1960s, pit stops began to include tire changes and minor repairs. By the 1980s, pit stops had become a vital part of F1 racing, with teams continuously practicing and perfecting their techniques to gain an edge over their competitors.
6 mar 2024 · In the 1990s, pit stops would last roughly 10 seconds as cars got a fresh set of wheels in addition to being refueled. But since Guinness World Records began monitoring the world's fastest Formula 1 pit stop in 2013, the record has only had 0.12 seconds knocked off in 11 years.
