Horace (en latin : Quintus Horatius Flaccus, prononcé : / ˈ k ʷ i ː n t u s (h) o ˈ r a ː t i u s ˈ f l a k ː u s /) est un poète latin, né le 8 décembre 65 av. J.-C. à Vénouse dans le sud de l'Italie [n 1] et mort le 27 novembre 8 av. J.-C. à Rome.
Horace Walpole, 4º Conte di Orford (Londra, 24 settembre 1717 – Londra, 2 marzo 1797), è stato uno scrittore inglese, considerato il fondatore della letteratura gotica, autore de Il castello di Otranto, primo romanzo horror propriamente detto, e attivo in diversi ambiti e con vari interessi.
Horace honors the courage and exploits of Tiberius, the elder son of the empress Livia, on his victories over the tribes of the Raetian Alps. He then praises Augustus, whom he extols as the glory of the war, the defense of Roman and Italy, and as the undisputed ruler of the world.
Horace warns his book of Epistles of the fate that attends publishing. He compares it to a young and beautiful slave, and foretells its destiny – 1) Success until it falls into the hands of the vulgar; 2) Banishment to the provinces; 3) An old age spent in schools.
Horace is a play by the French dramatist Pierre Corneille, drawing on Livy's account of the battle between the Horatii and the Curiatii. Written in reply to critics of his Le Cid, it was dedicated to cardinal Richelieu and proved the author's second major success on its premiere in March 1640.
