Midway was the first town built by a railroad company in Kentucky, established by the Lexington and Ohio Railroad (L&O). It sits "midway" between Frankfort and Lexington.

Visitors can fly into the closer. smaller Blue Grass Airport (LEXIATA) , in Lexington, or flying into larger airports further away. Louisville International Airport (SDFIATA) and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVGIATA) are further away from Midway, but are served by more airlines than Blue Grass Airport.
