Male power. Like ''Aunt Jennifer's Tigers'', this poem looks at the danger inherent in a relationship with a man. The husband is likened to a dangerous weapon; he has the power to destroy Rich. Marriage is not portrayed here as a meeting of equals, but rather as the mastery of the woman by the man.
The poem is rich in functional metaphor - not a spontaneous metaphor (poetic ornament to decorate or embellish). Rather, they are logical, throughout, functional and are sustained throughout the poem (embody the central idea of the poem or 'carry' the poem)

5 mar 2010 · Adrienne Rich describes these roofwalkers as Giants. This represents the great poets of the time. Rich calls them roofwalkers as they are raised high above society, looking down on everyone else.
Rich shared the view of all newly weds that herself and her husband were “special” and could withstand the “failures of the race”. The poem addresses the fact that her husband is now “wastefully dead”.
Question. Discuss how Rich makes effective use of a variety of characters, often in dramatic settings, to probe both personal issues and wider social concerns in her poems. Develop your response with reference to the poetry by Adrienne Rich on your course.
