Gediminas (Latin: Gedeminne, [1] Gedeminnus; [2] c. 1275 – December 1341) was Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1315 or 1316 [3] [4] until his death in 1341. [5] [6] He is considered the founder of Lithuania's capital Vilnius (see: Iron Wolf legend). [6] During his reign, he brought under his rule lands from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.

Origin. The origin of Gediminas himself is much debated. Some sources say he was Vytenis ' ostler, others that he was of peasant stock. Some historians consider him as the son or grandson of Lithuanian or Yatvingian King/duke Skalmantas.
Gediminas' Tower is an important state and historic symbol of the city of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself. It was depicted on the former national currency, the litas, and is mentioned in numerous Lithuanian patriotic poems and folk songs.
