The Ceddo (the outsiders, or non-Muslims) try to preserve their traditional culture against Islam, Christianity, and the slave trade. When local king Demba War sides with the Muslims, the Ceddo abduct his daughter, Dior Yacine, to protest their forced conversion to Islam.
Ambientato in un periodo imprecisato tra il XVII e il XIX secolo, il film è incentrato sui Ceddo, “il popolo del rifiuto” che respinge un regime resosi complice dell’ascesa al potere del fanatismo islamico e del lento ma duraturo dilagare della schiavitù e del colonialismo euroamericano.

Ceddo rappresenta una comunità africana del XVII secolo sottomessa alla violenza di due potenze straniere e culturalmente diverse: l'Islam, che ha convertito il re e la sua corte, e il colonialismo europeo, rappresentato da un mercante di schiavi e da un prete cattolico, la cui chiesa è sempre vuota.
Set in an imprecisely time between the 17th and the 19th century, the film centers the Ceddo, or “the people of refusal” who reject a regime that makes itself complicit with the rise to power of Islamic fanaticism and the slow but lasting encroachment of Euro-American enslavement and colonialism.
