Alois was the illegitimate son of Maria Schicklgruber, who had married Johann's older brother, Johann Georg Hiedler on 10 May 1842, who may in fact have been Alois' natural father. Alois would claim in his later life that Johann Georg Hiedler was not his stepfather, but in fact his biological father, since Johann Nepomuk informally adopted Alois during Alois' childhood.
Johann Georg Hiedler acted as Alois' stepfather and was legally declared as the birth father many years after Georg's death. However, his presumed parentage remains unverified. A second candidate for being the father of Alois was Johann Nepomuk Hiedler, Georg's brother, who owned a farm in the nearby town of Spital, and to whom Georg sent Alois to be raised through his teen years. Johann Georg Hiedler (getauft am 28.Februar 1792, † 9. Februar 1857) war der Vater oder Ziehvater von Alois Hitler, dem Vater von Adolf Hitler.. Johann Georg Hiedler war der Sohn von Martin Hiedler (1762–1829), einem Bauern aus Spital und seiner Frau Anna Maria Göschl (1760–1854).
In 1842, Johann Georg Hiedler married Alois’s mother. Alois was brought up in the family of Hiedler’s brother, Johann Nepomuk Hiedler.
