Bill Whelan is an award winning composer and producer based in Co. Galway, Ireland.He composes music for theatre, film, television and orchestra. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Music and is best known for his Grammy Award winning score Riverdance.
Riverdance is a theatrical show that consists mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. With a score composed by Bill Whelan , it originated as an interval act during the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 , featuring Irish dancing champions Jean Butler , Michael Flatley and the vocal ensemble Anúna .
The Road to Riverdance by Bill Whelan is a skilfully attuned record of one of Ireland’s most famous and influential composers. Riverdance exploded across the stage at Dublin’s Point Theatre one spring evening in 1994 during a seven-minute interval of the Eurovision Song Contest hosted by Ireland.
Bill was also named Billboard Magazine’s Top World Music Artist for 1996 & 1997 and the RIVERDANCE album was the Top World Music Album for 1997 for the second consecutive year. The soundtrack features 15 of Whelan’s compositions, and captures the traditional beauty of Celtic music with new melodies that evoke sounds from Russian, Spanish, Eastern European, and American music.
