John Perceval, 2nd earl of Egmont was an eccentric British politician and pamphleteer, a confidant of George III. Perceval sat in the Irish House of Commons from 1731 to 1748, when he succeeded to his father’s earldom in the Irish peerage.

This portrait is a smaller, simpler copy of a portrait with a more elaborate background by Hans Hysing now in the collection of Oglethorpe University, Georgia. This portrait descended in the Byrd family and remains in a private collection.
