Rabindranath was born on 7 May 1861 Calcutta. His father Debendranath Tagore was a leading light in the Brahmo Samaj – a reforming Hindu organisation which sought to promote a monotheistic interpretation of the Upanishads and move away from the rigidity of Hindu Orthodoxy which they felt was holding back India.
Rabindranath Tagore fréquente d'abord l'Oriental Seminary. Peu disposé à un système éducatif formel, il commence à étudier à domicile sous la houlette de professeurs particuliers. Son inscription au Collège Saint-Xavier de Calcutta, en 1875, constitue l'ultime tentative de sa famille de lui faire suivre un cursus classique.
Rabindranath Tagore, of Thakur (Calcutta, 7 mei 1861 - aldaar, 7 augustus 1941) was een beroemd dichter, roman- en toneelschrijver. Tevens beoefende hij de schilderkunst en sprak ook Esperanto [1] . Hij was bovendien de eerste Indiase winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur in 1913.
