Mercedes de Acosta (March 1, 1893 – May 9, 1968) was an American poet, playwright, and novelist. In her 1960 autobiography, Here Lies the Heart, she claimed to have been intimate with Isadora Duncan, Marlene Dietrich , Alice B. Toklas, Marie Laurencin, Eva Le Gallienne, Malvina Hoffman, Adele Astaire and Greta Garbo.

The couple subsequently had eight children, of whom Mercedes was the last. Despite her parents’ fanatical Roman Catholicism, the young de Acosta grew up a pampered member of New York high society.
