Życiorys. Glass urodził się 31 stycznia 1937 roku w Baltimore w stanie Maryland, USA. W wieku sześciu lat zaczął uczyć się gry na skrzypcach, w ośmiu – na flecie. W 1956 ukończył matematykę i filozofię na uniwersytecie w Chicago. Potem postanowił zostać kompozytorem i wstąpił do Juilliard School w Nowym Jorku .
