Gerhard Richter, pittore tedesco, uno dei più conosciuti artisti del dopoguerra, nasce a Dresda in Germania il 9 febbraio 1932 da una famiglia della classe media. Cresce nelle campagne di Reichenau, nella Bassa Slesia, ed a Waltersdorf all'interno Alta Lusazia (Oberlausitz) sopravvivendo al bombardamento della sua città ed al programma di eutanasia al quale era stato destinato dai nazisti.

In 1961 he relocated to West Germany, where he developed into one of the most distinguished artists of his time.
