He was born Yoshihiro Ikeuchi in Kyoto on May 15, 1933, and eventually took the stage name of his director and scriptwriter father Mansaku Itami (Yoshitoyo Ikeuchi), who was famed for the satirical way he portrayed Japan in many of his movies.

Tampopo (タンポポ, Tanpopo, literally "dandelion") is a 1985 Japanese comedy film written and directed by Juzo Itami, and starring Tsutomu Yamazaki, Nobuko Miyamoto, Kōji Yakusho, and Ken Watanabe. The publicity for the film calls it the first "ramen Western", a play on the term spaghetti Western .

Jūzō Itami (1933–1997) was a Japanese actor and, later, a popular modern screenwriter and film director. Many critics came to regard him as Japan's greatest director since Akira Kurosawa. His ten feature-length movies and one short film, all of which he wrote himself, are comic satires on elements of Japanese culture.
