11 mar 2023 · These would turn out to be her last recordings. Just four years later, on 26th September 1937, Bessie Smith was killed in a car accident. Her legacy lives on in the recordings and her message to working-class African-American women that they too had the right to drink, party and enjoy life away from the drudgery of working to earn a living.
