La ópera está escrita en el género de opéra-comique con números musicales separados por diálogos. La historia de Carmen está ambientada en Sevilla, alrededor de 1820, y la protagoniza una bella gitana de temperamento fiero. Carmen, libre con su amor, seduce al cabo don José, un soldado inexperto.

Carmen est une œuvre d' opéra-comique que l'on peut rapprocher de l' orientalisme en ce qu'elle se déroule dans une Espagne imaginaire 2. À la différence de Mérimée, Bizet choisit de faire de Carmen le personnage principal de cette histoire, à contre-pied du carcan moral qui s’abat sur son époque 3 .
