Elisabeth Dorothea of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (8 January 1640 – 24 August 1709), was a German regent. She was Landgravine of Hesse-Darmstadt by marriage to Louis VI, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, and Regent of Hesse-Darmstadt during the minority of her son from 1678 to 1688.
Saxe-Altenburg (German: Sachsen-Altenburg) was one of the Saxon duchies held by the Ernestine branch of the House of Wettin in present-day Thuringia. It was one of the smallest of the German states with an area of 1323 square kilometers and a population of 207,000 (1905) of whom about one fifth resided in the capital, Altenburg .
Dorothea Maria of Anhalt (Dessau, 2 July 1574 – Weimar, 18 July 1617), was by birth a member of the House of Ascania and princess of Anhalt. After her marriage, she became Duchess of Saxe-Weimar . Dorothea Maria was the sixth daughter of Joachim Ernest, Prince of Anhalt , but second-born daughter by his second wife Eleonore, daughter of Christoph, Duke of Württemberg .

On May 11, 1628, Dorothea was appointed adjutant of Quedlinburg Monastery by her sister Dorothea Sophie, whose aunt Maria had been abbot of the monastery since before 1610. In 1633, Dorothea left the convent and she married Albert IV, Duke of Saxe-Eisenach (1599-1644) in Weimar on June 24. She survived her husband until 31 years.
