In 1967, The Mamas & the Papas were performing at Monterey Pop Festival when Michelle Phillips pulled out a banana from her pocket mid-song and took several bites from it while continuing to sing. This was not something that anyone expected or had seen before; thus causing quite some buzz amongst fans who wondered what was going on.
The same year People Like Us came out, Doherty launched a solo career with his album Whatcha' Gonna Do? His second solo set, 1974's Waiting for a Song, included backing vocals from Michelle Phillips and Cass Elliot; initially released only in Canada, it proved to be one of Elliot's final recordings, as the singer died in late June of that year.
