Some saw their inclusion in the book as Mercedes ‘outing’ them. Certainly, it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to work out who are the gays and lesbians among the people mentioned.

Schanke adroitly mines lost archival materials and mixes in his own interviews with de Acosta’s intimates to correct established myths and at last construct an accurate, detailed, and vibrant portrait of the flamboyantly uninhibited early-twentieth-century author, poet, and playwright.
Neben der sexwütigen de Acosta ("Ich kann jede Frau jedem Mann abspenstig machen") war es vor allem der Autor Hugo Vickers, der 1994 aus Garbos Liebesleben Kapital schlug. Er schlachtete für das Buch "Loving Garbo" jede Menge Interviews mit Zeitzeugen sowie die bis dahin zugänglichen Briefe der "Göttlichen" aus und schrieb sich über die Affären mit de Acosta und Cecil Beaton die Finger wund.
