This film, unlike "The Patriot," shows camp followers, Indians on both sides, fighting women, "Not Worth a Continental" issues, lots of dirt and the conventions and results of 18th century warfare. Valley Forge isn't as grim an encampment as paintings and written records reported, but it's a close miss for the English countryside location.

The park features 3,500 acres of meadows, woodlands, and monuments commemorating the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War generation and honoring the power of people to pull together and overcome adversity during extraordinary times.
The drama, based on Maxwell Anderson's 1934 play, vividly depicts George Washington's efforts to hold together his poorly-fed and ill-equipped army during the harsh winter of 1777-78.

Valley Forge park was in existence then, a state park since 1893, not federal until 1976. But in the valley looking southwest from today's Visitor Center, there were western sets, film production labs, and more stretching along the Schuylkill River.
