Full page view. HISTORY. The film's working title was Girl of the Year. George Petty first drew "The Petty Girl" around 1930 for a Midwestern brewery's "near-beer" advertisement. In 1933, The Petty Girl first appeared in Esquire. According to a 12 Oct 1942 HR news item, the rights to "The Petty Girl" were first sold to RKO.
The film's protagonist, George Petty (played by Robert Cummings), is supposedly based on the actual artist. At the time of this production, Petty had been drawing these girls for Esquire Magazine since 1933 and would continue to do so for another six years.
