8 feb 2016 · In all honestly, I never heard of After the Ball until I saw it listed on Amazon, and I loved it to pieces! I love rom-coms with a touch of whimsy, and this one was top of the line for me. The story was cute, the setting was fascinating for me (family history in the business) and the acting was right on target.

An accompanying animated short film, The Butterfly Ball, was made by the Halas & Batchelor company. On 16 October 1975, a one-off performance at the Royal Albert Hall took place. Again it had a star-studded cast of rock musicians, most notably Ian Gillan who was drafted in at the last minute and received a standing ovation on his entrance.

Vesta Tilly certainly lived a happy and successful life, with a happy marriage and no major tragedy to speak of. Unfortunately, that kind of life doesn’t exactly make riveting entertainment. The most striking aspect of After the Ball is the way that the characters don’t age at all from 1882 to 1916, but then suddenly get old very quickly.
