Tyrese Darnell Gibson est né à Watts, un quartier de Los Angeles où il a suivi ses études dans la grande école de Locke. Sa carrière a commencé quand il se fit remarquer à un spectacle de talents, à l'âge de quatorze ans. En 1997 il apparait dans une publicité de Coca-Cola où il chante dans un bus.
