Christoph von Dohnányi wurde als Sohn des Juristen und späteren Widerstandskämpfers Hans von Dohnányi und seiner Frau Christine, geb. Bonhoeffer, in Berlin geboren. Mit 27 Jahren wurde er am Theater Lübeck der damals jüngste Generalmusikdirektor Deutschlands.
Mit Beginn der Saison 2004/05 hat Christoph von Dohnányi als Chefdirigent die künstlerische Hauptverantwortung für das NDR Sinfonieorchester übernommen - ein Porträt.
Im September 1997 wurde Christoph von Dohnányi Principal Conductor beim Londoner Philharmonia Orchestra, nachdem er schon seit 1994 Principal Guest Conductor dieses Orchesters gewesen war.
