Born on 31 December 1928, Strathmore was the eldest son of Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes-Lyon and Elizabeth Margaret Cator (1899–1959). His paternal grandparents were the 14th Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and his maternal grandfather was John Cator, Conservative MP for Huntingdon.

Thomas Bowes-Lyon, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (3 May 1773 – 27 August 1846) From 1 October 1767 and until his death, he sat as a Scottish representative peer in the House of Lords . On 7 March 1776, Lord Strathmore died of tuberculosis whilst at sea on his way to Portugal and was succeeded in turn by his sons, John and Thomas.
Lyon was baptized on 6 July 1704, the seventh son of John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and his wife Lady Elizabeth Stanhope daughter of Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield. [ 1 ] Lyon was returned as Tory member of parliament (MP) for Forfarshire on the Strathmore interest at the 1734 British general election .
Born in 1868, Lady Mildred Marion Bowes Lyon was the eighth of eleven children of the 13 th Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. She married an American from Philadelphia called Augustus Jessup at Glamis Castle in 1890.
