Continente is MC´s food retail brand. With more than 35 years ago, it was the first hypermarket chain to exist in Portugal and nowadays it remains the leader of the country’s food retail sector. Consumer-oriented, its low prices, strong promotional dynamics, product quality and variety are the brand’s lines of operation.
Continente is a retail chain that belongs to Sonae Distribuição, the largest retailer in Portugal. The hypermarket Continente chain is spread all over continental Portugal as well on Madeira and in the Azores. The supermarket chain Continente Modelo, formerly named just Modelo, has also a nationwide presence.

28 mag 2021 · 28th May 2021. Continente has opened a ‘supermarket’ with no cash tills, shopping trolleys, baskets (or queues) in Jardim do Arco do Cego, in Lisbon. It’s ‘an experiment’ using technology developed by Portuguese start-up Sensei. Basically, customers can go in, put whatever they want in bags they bring with them, and walk out again.
