At about the same time in Switzerland, Joost Bürgi, a court clock maker by profession, grappled with the same issues of computation.Bürgi's key motivation was not only to facilitate computation, but also to produce a single table that could be applied to all arithmetical operations, rather than needing various tables to perform them all.

Born in Switzerland, Bürgi acquired considerable skills in mathematics and astronomical observations and computations. In 1579, he became clockmaker and instrument-maker at the Kassel observatory, the first to be fitted with a revolving dome.
In den Jahren 1604 bis 1630 stand JOBST BÜRGI in den Diensten des Kaisers RUDOLF II. bzw. dessen Nachfolgers MATTHIAS. Am kaiserlichen Hof in Prag traf er mit JOHANNES KEPLER (1571 bis 1630) zusammen. Durch ihn wurde BÜRGI zur Veröffentlichung seiner Erkenntnisse über Logarithmen ermuntert. Im Jahre 1631 kehrte JOBST BÜRGI nach Kassel zurück.
Bürgi's Geometrische Progress Tabulen appeared at Prague in 1620, and contained the logarithms of numbers from 10 8 to 10 9 by tens. Bürgi did not use the term logarithmus, but by reason of the way in which they were printed he called the logarithms "red numbers," the numbers; corresponding, "black numbers." Bürgi, Joost (Jobst).
