Kitsilano Secondary School, like the neighbourhood where it is located, was named after Xats’alánexw (Khahtsahlanogh).He was a highly respected family headman, or siy̓ám̓ of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) who shared kinship ties to the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples and other Coast Salish communities.

The present building was erected in 1924 and became known as the Kitsilano Junior Senior High School - the first of its kind in Canada. It commenced operations on September 6th, 1927, with a total enrolment of 1,275 pupils and teachers. A lot of the graduates of 1971 started in Grade 7 at Kits in September of 1965.
