The Asphyx, also known as Spirit of the Dead and The Horror of Death, is a 1972 British horror film/science fiction film directed by Peter Newbrook and starring Robert Stephens and Robert Powell.
29 set 2018 · REVIEW: Rightfully viewed as a classic gothic horror film, the Asphyx is a movie that needs to be looked at on two differing levels. First is in the sense of how it fares for modern audiences used to today’s offerings, and also how it holds up as a film from the period. For today’s audience this movie may not have great appeal.
22 gen 2023 · Sir Cunningham’s growing obsession with the asphyx becomes increasingly disturbing to his ward and assistant, Giles (Robert Powell, looking mod/dapper). Hugo has become fixated on the notion of capturing one’s asphyx and locking it up. Because, it’s reasoned, if the asphyx can’t carry your soul away, you can’t die.
The film hasn't gained itself the best reputation in the three decades since its release, and it was apparently ignored upon its introduction to the general public. This isn't surprising - The Asphyx takes elements from supernatural horror and there's a little bit of sci-fi involved, but selling this film couldn't have been easy as there's no way to pigeon hole it.

7 feb 2023 · The film does not rely strictly on a ghoulish outside force to cause mayhem, but rather it shows the darkness that resides in man when hubris and grief are thrown into the mix. This is more unsettling than any monster that you could throw at the audience. The performances in this one are terrific, and the atmosphere established is unimpeachable.
